βHey there, future changemaker! Dream big, be a PFAS explorer, and never stop learning. Find your passion, ask for help when needed, and take some fun risks.β
My research aims to investigate the presence and sources of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Suriname and Ghana, two seemingly different lower middle-income countries. PFAS are widespread environmental contaminants associated with health issues. While both countries share a historical connection through the slave trade, they may have different pathways of PFAS exposure. Suriname's potential sources include pesticides, firefighting foams, and plastic companies, while Ghana is affected by e-waste contamination, particularly in Tarkwa. The study's goal is to identify the most likely reservoirs for human exposure to PFAS in both countries, considering potential dietary exposure. Environmental samples will be collected and analyzed, and the results will inform future environmental analysis, identify at-risk populations, and contribute to the understanding of global PFAS transport. This research may also help secure funding for further studies on PFAS and health effects in these populations.
